I have always been facinated by Venice, probably from the movie 'the italian job' but just because it was a floating city surrounded by tonnes of land and mountains, but for some strange reason they decided to build the whole place right in the middle of a massive swamp/lake on millions of pilions - just because .... Haha weird!
Everyone from Busabout stayed out of town at a camping ground but i kept travelling, through the pouring rain, deep into the city to my cute hostel in the city centre on the waters edge. After a bus a train and a boat ride i arrived and was so exciting to be in such an unbeleivable city! This place was insane and it looked soooooo beautiful with all the building lights reflecting off the water in every direction. I got straight to bed and headed out the next day to explore this wonder..
First stop was an Italian coffee, and it was the best thing ive ever drank in my life yummmmmmmm, so i got a few more throughout the day as they only cost $1 euro each :) I met up with 2 english girls and Gavin a kiwi guy, they were part of the Granau crew too and we explored Venice... It was a maze of skinny crowed streets along all different sized rivers. Every building was old and weathered showing different colours and patterns amoung chunks of missing bricks and old wooden swollen doors. It looked alot nicer at night but was still stunning!
We ate pizza, drank wine by the river with cheese and crackers while we watched the hundereds of overpriced goundolours row past full of snapping asian and indian tourists. Traditional opera music played from around the plcae and it seemed very hard to spot even one local - this place was overrun by every tourist you could imagine!
That night i met a huge group of solo travellers from my hostel, i just walked back in after a big day out and they invited me out for some fun in the city -so of course i said yes and we piled on the ferry to cross the river once again... We found the uni strip full of bars an live music and street performers, bought a bottle of wine each and made our own little party on the steps of a statue in the middle of the square. So much fun! After running through the water filled streets getting a bit lost we managed to find the ferry and headed back to the hostel just beating the sun - Great night out!
All the water in Vennice was just a big tease to me, you couldnt swim in it but it stared you in the face every second through the blazing heat - so i packed my bag and cut off my last 5 days there, jumped back on the bus, after camping for a night with the busabout crew, and i was off again to Croatia -it was time to lay on the beach after trecking through city after city for weeks....
