Micro-climates and Julio Cesar II
After leaving Salta and heading out on an 8am bus we found ourselves in the alien to tourists San Miguel De Tucuman, not sure why it has no tourists as its amazing, Los Yungas within 30mins drive and 11 micro-climates around the city within 30km! The plan was a simple stopover and head to a spa town called Rio Hondo but after seeing the tourist information office we decided to stay and headed to a hostel close by. Los Yungas (the hostel name too!) was a funky place with loads of students staying there and was run by a couple who loved all English music, so rejoiced when we said that Eric Clapton is indeed a legend, they helped us loads, despite Julio Cesar not speaking any English we spoke to him for hours on end! I got put in charge of music selection for the night too, Sarah wrote lots of stuff in our new journal (made of sugar cane) We stayed in as we went out in Salta the night before and had a few too many drinks (Sarah nearly got arrested and was hungover the next day - which turned out to be about 36 degrees which did ney help)
The next day we headed out to the jungle by local bus up a dangerous looking hill with u-turn after u-turn, great views too! A quick visit a big statue of something overlooking the city and then the plan was to go to a waterfall we had heard about, however a local lady told us it was 10km away, with only a few buses a day we set out to walk it, after much wearing Sarah down on the subject I triumphed and we decided to hitch a lift down to the falls, we got picked up by an Argentinian young couple and made it in 20mins or so! We found the fall and decided to walk upstream (in the stream of course) whilst enjoying the lovely weather! In the hot weather we had to stay up both nights untill late so the weather could cool down a bit, next morning we took the bus to La Rioja at 7am, which meant getting up at the unearthly time of 5.30.
ps. The waterfall in the pic is not the same one, ours was smaller than a book on Port Vale´s successes.
