Laid out with neatness and precision, the famous Tyne Cot Cemetery was so called because one of the small re-enforced look-out buildings which was on the site was euphemistically called the "Tyne Cottage" by the soldiers - a name that also has more than a touch of irony. Like the list of names on the Tyne Cot wall tablets from the previous page, the graves themeselves seem to go on forever and however admirable the desire is to make a fitting memorial to the fallen, the fact that none of these mainly young men would have wanted their final resting place to be here remains as poignant today as it ever was.
