Well after five days of relaxation/boredom in Cairns it was time for our next adventure in the beautiful islands of Fiji, where I would meet up with my fabulous girlfriend Becky a.k.a. 'Bug'. Extremly exciting!
After arriving at Cairns airport we got on our connecting flight to Brisbane easily enough (at one point this was in doubt due to cyclone warnings!), the flight took us about 2 hours and basically took us half way back down the route we'd previously drove up in Genie, it was good to see everything from the air though! And what was to hit us at Brisbane.......only a nice 6 hour delay to our flight! Great! So we settled down for a kip and spent our complementary 15 dollar food voucher, as long as we got to Fiji before Becky I didn't really care! At this point it did seem like everything was against us with cyclone's in Cairns, delays to flighhts and heavy snow in England, not to mention the coup in Fiji! Surely this wasn't going to be ruined!
I arrived in Fiji about 2 in the morning and checked into our hostel, then had about 2 hours kip before I went back to the airport to meet Becky! How exciting! After waiting a while it was so worth it when when I saw her little face pop round the sliding doors and come running towards me like a maniac, I had to brace myself for the impact as she did have a very heavy backpack on! It was so good to see her after 3 months away! We got our transfer back to the Skylodge and settled down to a few hours kip after Becky had greeted Leeroy and G'bo with a swift punch and a hug! I'm sure they loved it!
Anyway after some kip (Becky was exteremly excited at this point) we headed to reception to book our transfer to the islands which as I'm sure you're aware are supposed to be stunning! I'm sure they would be if it wasn't pouring down with terential rain! Seriously we've had the worst luck with weather, I reckon we've had more rain than an English Spring! The following day we headed off to the island of Waya Leilei, Becky's jet lag had kicked in and we were both feeling a bit worse for wear and after a 2 hour boat journey on rough seas it wasn't the best introduction to the island, the accommodation was basic and not really what we needed for the following nights as we both needed to recover. After a few hours of chilling out and a bit of snoozing we decided the best idea was to head back to the mainland and recharge our batteries! This is what we did!
We checked into a slightly upmarket hotel with the home comforts that we needed and for the following few days treated ourselves and generally had a good time messing around in the pool and eating lots of nice food! The slide was awesome! After a few days recooperation we decided to head back out to the islands and this time we made a much better choice! We decided to stay at Bounty Island, this is the island where Celebrity Love Island was filmed and it was just perfect, exactly what we needed! The boat only took about half an hour, the sea was calm and the sun was shining, bliss! The island was just like the photos, so we arrived at our own private beachfront bure and knew that this was going to be just amazing! You can't beat spending valentines day with your girlfriend on Bounty Island, a dream come true!
If any of you watched the 'Love Island' series the place we were staying at was the exact place where the celebrities stayed, with the pool and everything! The love shack was located on the otherside of the island but was a bit derelict! We spent the first day we got there just chilling by the pool and relaxing in our beachfront bure! We had a little sleep on our hamoc on the beach! Yes we had a hamoc on the beach! For the evenings entertainment it was 'Fiji night' so loads of Fijians came from the neighbouring island and performed local dances which were just incredible they are obviously very proud of their country and rightly so! Earlier that night the Fijians put on a welcome ceremony where they made the traditional drink 'kava' and we got to sample it, it doesn't taste the best but it really does chill you out, especially after a few! So we continued to enjoy the evening with our cocktails whilst looking over the red sky and a beautiful sunset, perfection!
Earlier on our first day we had met a guy called Ron, his cousin used to be the manager of Bounty Island and he lived in one of the biggest villages in Fiji, which is actually the first ever Fijian village and is where the president lives, infact the president is Ron's grandfather! Amazing! Not only this but Ron has one leg so he's a bit like a pirate! He invited us to take his tour the following day which we gladly accepted.
So in the morning a boat came and picked us up from Bounty and took us to the mainland where our chauffeur would take us around the local sights. He took us to the first landing point on Fiji where the ruins of the first settlement from 1500 BC were situated, it had a killing rock and everything. Then he preceeded to take us to Ron's village where we had a look around and were invited warmly, we saw the Presidents house then moved onto Ron's house were he invited us in and his wife made us up some lunch and very nice it was too (the food was delicious on the island, especially the curry!), we met his son Bill and he performed a kava ceremony for us welcoming us into his house, it was amazing! A real insight to Fijian life and is probably one of the best things I've done so far, I will definately remember it for a long time! We proceeded onto Fiji's second biggest city Lautoka, which isn't that spectacular to be honest. After a hard day we headed back to the island for a nice relaxing evening with a few drinks.
Before we knew it, it was our last day on the island so we decided to make the most it and do some more snorkelling and test out the kayaks! We had previously gone snorkelling over the reef which I think Becky was slightly nervous about but by the end she was loving it; that was until we bumped into the local shark! Admitedly it was only a reef shark but its still a shark and they still bite! We saw the shark on the first day and Becky was slightly aprehensive about entering the water again but by the third day she was off swimming on her own and loving it, the shark even came back but this didn't phase her, no chance, it swam right by her feet, I wish I'd have seen it again! Snorkelling was ace, we saw loads of fish, the shark, a moray eel and several stingrays, ace fun! Think Becky's hooked! We spent a couple of hours kayaking around the island over to where the loveshack is left standing and got thoroughly burnt then sadly it was time for us to head back to the mainland for a couple of nights, we were both gutted to leave as we had had the best time ever, Bounty Island rules!
The goodbyes at the airport were not very nice to say the least especially as they had to put Becky on a different flight due to a huge delay but you have to look on the brightside, even though I won't see her for 15 weeks we had the best time ever and will have the best memories ever of Fiji, the place rules! Thank you Becky for taking the effort of coming to see me and helping me have such an amazing time! You're the best!
