A bit to catch up. Photos will hopefully be on tomorrow as I forgot to bring my cable out with me today.
Took the night bus from Arica after the afternoon at the beach south to San Pedro de Atacama on the edge of the desert. Went to find a tour to Salar de Uyuni and met Bram from Holland. We booked on a tour with 4 other people and then joined a french guy, Emile for sandboarding and then to see the sunset over the Valle de la Luna. I flipping hate sand! It gets everywhere and its damn hot! Fun boarding though with our instructor, Emilio but hard work walking back up in the boiling hot sand and at altitude! Hence boarding down holding my shoes!! The Valle de la Luna surprisingly is supposed to look like the surface of the moon and the sunset was beautiful. A shower later to wash away all the sand was delicious!
At 8.30am the next day we met with the rest of our group for the Salar de Uyuni trip. Ina and Caroline from Germany and friends Amalia from Argentina (hooray, our translater!) and Simona from Italy. Spent the entire 3 days being jealous of Amalia and Simona as they work for Renault Formula 1 team and travel the world for all the races doing the catering side. They had some great stories about Fernando, Michael etc (first name terms you know!!) and they were a lot of fun. Also, our Bolivian guide Simon.
After going over the border back into Bolivia, we visited several lakes and basically drove through miles of nothing. The landscape was incredible, sand and mountains. It really was awesome and i´ve taken about a million photos. Overnight, we stayed in a freezing cold hut thing in the middle of nowhere. It was pretty chilly! The next day, a few more beautiful lakes, one of which was our lunch stop where I bumped into Sam from the Loki hostel in Cuzco. After 5 weeks there, he finally managed to drag himself away! He was going in the opposite direction to me but good to see him all the same. We also saw an active volcano but I really wanted to see eruptions and exciting lava!!
Finally, we arrived at the edge of the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, at a hotel that is entirely made of salt. The next morning, we were up for sunrise and the salt flats really are awesome. They just go on forever, this expanse of white, 12,000km2 of salt. The pictures say it all really.
Then to Uyuni and we arrived here about an hour ago. Bram and I are heading south to Salta, Argentina together so we´re just waiting for the ticket office in the train station to open so we can buy a ticket for tonight. Will put photos on from Salta.
Only a week to go......! xxx
