Even in Costa Rica I can't escape my IT roots! Having already spent a few hours reviewing the project's website, I was then needed for some switch cabling troubleshooting, and then an error in Outlook which I had to try to translate to english before fixing. Hmmm I might keep my occupation to myself from now on.
My last few days at the project were good fun if a little wet. Point to note when cleaning animal cages near a river, when its raining AND when using a hose - your hand becomes a mosquito magnet!! The rain/hose washes your repellant off and bingo, 8 bites on one hand. Those of you that have travelled to tropical climes with me before will be surprised that I am only now mentioning insect bites. I am a good person to travel with as you can sit with me of an evening fully confident that you will not get bitten. This is because usually I am a mosquito magnet. I say usually because in Costa Rica I have only been averaging a coupe of bites a day, so pretty good for me. You will be please to know that Costa has 3 types of mosquito (oh how you spoil us) so some are really itchy, some are a lump with blood in, and some weep clear liquid yeah nice I know. Anyway the white faced monkey seemed to like licking the weeping ones on my earlobe - not really sure if this assisted healing or if I now have some monkey disease!!
Bought a live mouse on Monday to feed the baby boa constrictor, as you do, I'm not overly sure if the pet shop knew that was the reason we were buying it (my pet shop spanish is a bit flaky). Also got my monkey bent glasses fixed free of charge by a very amused optician and all his staff.
Last night at the Project we went to Happyland! Yes this does sound a bit like a theme park or a code word for a drug den, but is in fact a bar and restaurant. The volunteers and staff had made a card for me, which was really nice.
Saying goodbye to Carmen, my house Mum for the last 2 1/2 weeks was surprisingly quite emotional. It is such a different way of life to ours, a much simpler, less hurried slower paced way of life. Despite, or maybe because of the language difficulties, we laughed a lot. They let me share their lives and it was a truly unforgettable experience.
