Once we left Switzerland we travelled through some of Austria before entering Germany and on to Munich (or Munchen on a European map). On the way to Munich the busabout girl rang from the bus to book accommodation but found there were not enough caravans for all. She decided the fairest thing would be to hold a raffle for the beds, those that missed out could bunk down in a communal tent. fortunately as a couple we were in the draw twice and were very pleased to be drawn, particularly because we did not have sleeping bags. When we arrived we found that we in fact were only being provided with half a van, but we were still grateful.
Munich was heavily bombed in the wars and rebuilt quickly and cheaply so misses out on a lot of the charm of other European cities, and to make matters worse it was pouring with rain. We had planned to go out on the town, but given we would need to find some German Deutchmark (the constant need to secure local currency is a pain in the butt) and the fact it was so miserable we went to see what was on offer at the local shops. We found a take away and even though the lady had little English we managed to ascertain she would take Italian Lire which we had some. So we worked out what we could buy with the Lire and ordered, only to find when the food arrived she wanted twice the price.
We eventually worked out she was charging a deposit on the plates, and was not going to back down, so we only bought what did not need plates and she took the rest back. Crazy, we were going to sit at a table right in front of her. Anyhow on the plus side we noticed a drink dispenser with beer in it, and we now had some change, so bought ourselves a bottle of beer to have with our depleted meal.
So we went back to our little space and put on double layers of clothes, then turned our remaining clothes into pillows, and thought that it was good we were only staying one night. Tomorrow night is in the city of love, Venice.
