Our major stop in Portugal was a dream of a place!
We arrived in this small fishing port with surf beaches on a warm sunny day and immediately decided our planned 2 days was not going to be enough and changed it to 4. Our hostesses Vanessa and Heloisa from Casa Amarela were obliging and even did our washing for free (6 euros normally) as a present for Avan´s birthday.
Lagos has narrow cobblestone alleys with little shops and restaurants and cheap prices. Best of all we were in self contained accommodation with a fully equipped shared kitchen, BBQ and patio. We were in heaven and didn´t eat out the whole time we were in Lagos. Its funny when you have been on the road as long as us that eating your own prepared meals becomes the sought after experience, rather than eating out. We shared our apartment with 2 Melbourne girls, Dom and Renae and a German couple. Each couple had their own bathroom and bedroom however shared the kitchen and a patio.
Avan celebrated his birthday in Lagos with fresh fish and vegetables purchased direct from the early morning markets and BBQ´d at our holiday unit. Fantastic!
To go to the surf beaches in Lagos you catch a little ferry for 50c across the marina channel but there was also a lovely town beach which we enjoyed picnicking on. The beaches are beautiful sandy stretches more like home than we have seen in awhile. The water is much colder than the Mediterranean as this is the Atlantic ocean.
Lagos will stay in our memories as a place to recharge our batteries with siestas and wholesome home cooked food.
We moved onto the capital of Portugal, Lisbon, but only stayed one night as we had used our Lisbon days enjoying Lagos.
