Up and Atom, off we went to Retiro Train station, about a 30 minute walk from the hotel to catch the train to Tigre, a local train that departs every 15 minutes, was really simple, no problem buying the tickets, got returns and it was super super cheap.
Tigre sits on an island created by several small streams and rivers and was founded in 1820, after floods had destroyed other settlements in the area, then known as the Partido de las Conchas. The area's name derives from the “tigres” or jaguars that were hunted there, on occasions, in its early years. The area was first settled by Europeans who came to farm the land, and the port developed to serve the Delta and to bring fruit and wood from the Delta and ports upstream on the Paraná river. Tigre is still an important timber processing port. The “Puerto de Frutos” (fruit port) is now a crafts fair located in the old fruit market by the riverside. The wealthy come from Buenos Aires to stay in their holiday homes.
We 1st wandered the streets of Tigre and had some quick lunch them jumped on a boat trip for 1 hour to experience and Delta, wow never seen anything like this before, the number of houses and people living along all the small rivers off the main waterway was incredible. All sorts of houses, kids swimming in the river, people sunbathing on their jetties - all these kids swimming in this murky brown water and I'm sitting in the boat wondering about snakes and croc's, obviously there aren't any!! Rod & I got the usual 1st moment madness - oh we could come here for a holiday and hang out in one of these houses, getting all excited and carried away by a new experience...... Our boat trip was over too soon
