Copacabana was small but pretty. Although it was very sunny, and had the feel of a ´beach´town (due to it sitting right on Lake Titicaca, which is absolutely huge!), it was still pretty chilly and nights were freezing!
We spent Monday afternoon wandering around the town, looking at the market stalls and deciding where to eat! We eventually picked a cafe mentioned in the lonely planet guide....it was a great choice! The food was sooooooooo good! It took a while to arrive, but was all freshly cooked and tasted amazing (I think we have a couple of pictures showing our appreciation for the food! ha!)
We decided to book a trip at an agency in town to Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) for the next day, spent a couple of hours chilling in the sun by the lake, before retreating back to our hostel to add on extra layers before heading out for dinner! Despite the fact that when travelling it is thought that you eat little to save money, we seem to do the complete opposite! The food has been really good and so most days (when we don´t have a trip or tour booked) revolve a lot around when, where and what to eat!! Fortunately Hayley shares our love of food!! We ended up going to a very quirky ´cave-like´restaurant for dessert, which was decorated with weird and wonderful ornaments and had an abundance of board games! The food took ages to arrive (due to the fact there was one guy running the whole place) but we were happy playing a whole game of scrabble, before finally eating the best dessert ever!! Between the 3 of us we manage to devour a mix of chocolate cake, pancakes, banana, chocolate sauce and tonnes of ice cream, all for about 4 pounds!
(Sorry about all the mentions of food, but it has been so good we thought we should share it with you!!! :o) )
Tuesday lunchtime (after an amazing breakfast of porridge, fruit, museli, yoghurt, beans on toast and extra bacon) we caught a boat from Copacabana to the south of Isla del Sol. We were greeted by about 50 million steps to climb, which was not a great start to the trip! Steps aren´t the most fun when climbing them at sea level...when you are 4000m above sea level it means you have to break every couple of steps to catch your breath! Not fun!
Eventually reached a hostel at the top of the steps that looked relatively nice with amazing views of the lake. Dropped our bags off, then went for a walk around and had a hot drink whilst watching the sun set, before ending up back in our hostel restaurant for dinner! Spent the evening playing cards, eating and drinking, and headed to bed for an early night, as we had decided to wake up early the next day to walk to the north of the island!
Woke up early Wednesday, with the intention of having a quick breakfast and heading off on our walk. Breakfast took a while to arrive though, mostly because Jess and Hayley had ordered banana pancakes, fried egg, and cereal with yoghurt and fruit (!!), and so we set off on our walk later than planned. The walk started off pretty relaxed - scenery was nice and weather was warm. However, it started to drag a bit, and because we couldn´t tell how much further we had to go to reach the north of the island, we ended up having to walk pretty quickly as we wanted to catch a boat back to the south of the island at 1.30pm!
Fortunately we made the boat, which was lucky otherwise it would have been a long 3 hour walk back! Having originally planned to stay 2 nights on Isla del Sol, and return to Copacabana Thursday morning to catch a lunchtime bus to La Paz, we changed our minds and headed back to Copacabana Wednesday afternoon. There was more to do in the evening in Copacabana and we all wanted a hot shower!
We caught the bus to our next stop, La Paz which arrived at about 5pm the next day.
