Woke to a very misty morning so we were really glad we´d spent the day on the beach yesterday. Peniche has a ferry that runs out to some islands off the coast famous for puffins, cormorants, etc. so we thought we´d be nature lovers yet again and set off in search of some winged creatures.
The only time Dan has ever seen a puffin was on his plate in Iceland so he was keen to see what they look like alive, as for me, I had never seen one. The ferries were busy and we were lucky to get on one, a rather surprising fact when you see what the island is like.It was pretty chilly and you could hardly see 10 feet in front of your face so we were really beginning to question our judgement in choosing this type of day for an island trip.
Arrived to a rather bizarre welcome crowd, bongo drums, hippies, tourists in canoes, local fishermen etc. all hanging around the port. There is one tiny beach on this island and it was mobbed with Portugeezers, lots of hills to climb, a very ugly campsite, more than a zillion seagulls and b***** all puffins to see. This was a trip I would advise no-one to take, a very ugly island in very ugly weather, maybe on another day it would have seemed better. The place smells of seagull s*** and the flying rats dont let up all day with their squawking, really is pretty close to hell on earth. Took this one as a "learning experience". (Really) Rough guide strikes again. Dont think that the people who put this in the guide book actually went there, didnt see stinking island covered in annoying seagulls anywhere in the description.
Got off the boat and drove straight to Lisbon. We decided to stay across the water again at a gorgeous place on the coast, Costa de Caparica, this Orbitur campsite was lovely, really clean, very friendly staff and full of permanent caravans which gives it a kind of homely feel. The French people parked next to us were super friendly too and it always leaves you with a positive impression of a site.
