We left cradle mountain in fog and drizzle, the drizzle staying with us most of the way. The last 20km was on a gravel road where we didn't see another car. The scenery was again spectacular and the roads were again windy.
Today we were heading deeper in to the wilderness to Corinna, a remote historic mining town set in the pristine Tarkine rainforest surrounded by stunning wilderness on the banks of the majestic Pieman river. We had booked a little cottage with all solar power, rainwater, no phone, no TV, no internet - if you drive on a further 7km there is a location called "the telephone box" where you can pick up mobile service. All the cottages are named after pioneers of the area and ours was called Booth - skipper of 2 ships wrecked at the Pieman Heads in 1867. We were also given some local cheese and biscuits which ended up being our lunch.
After lunch we did a couple of short walks including the Whyte River walk of 1.5 hours through ancient Huon Pines and trying to spot platypus along the river, but no joy. Dan did manage to attract two leeches though. We ended the afternoon in the pub where they had happy hour and enjoyed a couple of pints before going back to our cottage to cook dinner.
The next day we boarded the Arcadia II boat for our 4-hour cruise along the river to the treacherous Pieman Heads. The boat is built of Tasmanian timber and in 1941 she was requisitioned by the Navy in Hobart for the 2nd world war to be used as an examination motor launch. In 1944 she was sent in to the pacific war zone around New Guinea to serve as a supply ship. She was refurbished in 2006 and returned to her original pristine condition and is the only huon pine river cruiser still operating anywhere in the world.
There was a small group of us including 2 couples from Holland and 4 ladies from America. We enjoyed a leisurely cruise along the river surrounded by rainforest, fish eagles and silence. We disembarked near the Pieman Heads and armed with our packed lunch we walked along the wild west coast, totally isolated, wild surf and strewn with driftwood - such stunningly beautiful scenery.
We arrived back to Corinna at about 2.30 and put the car on to the cable ferry to get to the other side of the river and our drive to our penultimate stop in Strahan.

Rachel Wow. That was rugged coastline. Fabulous. I love the welly tree. Did the barge instructions work? OMG. I would have been hysterical if I had attracted leeches!
