Arrived in Busan by bus on the outskirts of town and found our way to the hotel by underground train - Our double rucksack configuration was not particularly popular on the local transport system but we were starting to feel like we were proper "backpackers".
First impressions were of a big city with bright lights, similar to Seoul in many ways - Bizarrely, although the metro made navigation fairly easy, it was possible to walk from station to station underground through subterranean shopping malls - The sheer amount of exits and entrances was hugely confusing.
We decided to become true weekend western tourists and do all that stuff, starting with western food on the first night - Burger, chips and beer and it was excellent.
Next, the "hop on - hop off" city tour bus, which took most of the day and the highlight being the UN memorial cemetery, dedicated to all the soldiers from within the UN who lost their life supporting South Korea in their fight for freedom.
Keeping with our "city break" mentality, the next day we visited a cultural village on the edge of the city called Gamcheon. It was a place where the old houses remained intact and old trades were still being practiced along its narrow, steep winding streets - It was however very tourist focussed, not only being provided with a map but in case one was topographically challenged, a blue line on the road was painted along the route.
Busan has one of the best urban beaches we had come across, so we broke from our cultural mission and took a day out at the beach. As the dusk approached the city lights came on and illuminated the whole area around us, the amazing bridge spanning the bay also elaborately lit up, gave the place a magical quality - It needed a beer to appreciate it properly and being by the seaside, Fish and Chips were the food of choice.
For the rest of our time in Busan it was normal stuff, exploring, eating and drinking - The city had a friendly relaxed vibe that allowed time to pass quickly and soon our time was up and we were loading our "Backpacks" and heading for the port , ready to board our ferry to Japan.

Rachel What an eclectic place. Those cut outs blended in so cleverly. Steep steps, urban trees, bridges, skyscrapers and its own Balcon de Europe! Love the rocks out at sea. I thought the UN Memorial Cemetry was spectacular. Love the hearts on the beach.
