Well the last night out on La Paz must've been a big one as the next morning a lot of people were running late for the transfer to our truck. Rachel decided we had to leave behind Aerial and Kathryn as they woke up the time they should've been leaving and their bags weren't packed. As we were putting the last of the luggage in the truck Kathryn turned up in a taxi (though she realized later she'd left behind a lot of her stuff in her haste to get to the truck). Aerial had to catch a public bus to Potosi (approx 10hrs plus stops) but luckily Carl & Claire who had left our tour were headed there anyway so she didn't have to do it on her own.
We got in to Potosi quite late so we had Chinese from the place next door. Food was very average.
Potosi is the highest city at an altitude of 4100m. Making the altitude sickness worse and harder to breathe with such a bad cough to add to the mix.
The next day some of the group went on a excursion to the mines which is famous for silver and other metals. The rest of us wanted a low key day to visit the mint museum, markets and rest. We went for the orientation walk and found that the mint museum was closed on Mondays. Such a shame as its meant to be a great museum about the history of making currencies. Mainly coins from the silver they mine and export to many countries over the years including Britain.
Checked out the markets and stocked up on some toiletries and had a freshly squeezed orange juice and empanadas for lunch. Some of the others bought DVDs so we headed back to the hotel to rest in front of the tv and watch DVDs. The altitude had really affected us in Potosi and we couldn't wait to leave. I had a siesta (although 4hrs is longer than the average siesta) but again it was so hard to breathe I kept waking up choking in my sleep. I got more cough medicine and an asthma puffer to help me breathe.
The next morning I woke up feeling uneasy and hoped I would feel better once I got to Sucre which is only 2700m in altitude.
Got to Sucre and definitely had an upset stomach. We went out for lunch and soon as we got back I was sick again multiple times. Aerial gave me some meds and that seemed to do the trick so we went out for dinner and afterwards played some pool and had salsa lessons. By that time most of our group was there and we were having a great time salsa dancing.
Unfortunately the cramps returned so I knew I had to leave fast and spent the night on the loo. Barely slept and was sick all the next day :( not much fun.
Wasn't just me though, Rob, Brett & Lauren were really sick too, Lauren even had to have an injection to stop the vomiting.
Such a shame as Sucre seemed like such a pretty town but I only got to explore a couple of blocks near the hotel/main square.
Next day we have to drive approx 10hrs to Uyuni and we go back up in altitude again. Not looking forward to it :(
