We had a leisurely morning. I took time to blog, and Tim played a board game with Belia, Mariah and Darius.
Later in the day we drove to Losheim where Luigi's brother, Albi, and his family live. It was just under an hour away. We drove all paved country roads, and again Tim was enjoying the curves, wishing he was in a Porsche.
We found Albi's eis cafe, (ice cream cafe) and the girls working there phoned Albi letting him know we arrived. We hadn't seen Albi for over 20 years, and wondered if he was still so animated and friendly. He arrived within 10 minutes and gave us a warm welcome. We felt like we were hanging out with Luigi because so many of his mannerisms were similar, and the sound of his voice too. While we caught up we enjoyed some very special ice cream hand made by Albi. He recommended the spaghetti eis, which is ice cream at a very cold temperature put through a press making it look like spaghetti, and then covered in strawberry sauce which looks like tomato sauce. Albi's daughter, Marcellina, was at the cafe and stopped to say hello. I had only seen her in a baby picture years ago so it was surprising to see her so grown up, - a teenager already! As people walked into the cafe we noticed the incredible rapport Alby has with his customers. We could see why so many people were dropping in - good food, good company!
Leaving the cafe to follow Albi to his house, we noticed his "traveling eis truck". A nicely restored vintage truck. I'm not sure what make it is, but very nice. Albi uses it to go to birthday parties, celebrations and fairs making his business even bigger. The eis is delicious, but I'm sure his presence at the events adds positive energy to the atmosphere, making the occasions a huge success.
Albi's wife Terri greeted us with the same warmth as Albi, making us feel completely at home. Their house use to be a barn but was renovated into a family home. Albi's mom, Marci, was visiting; we know her well from our many visits to their former ranch near High River years ago. We had a great time catching up with Marci, enjoying her great sense of humor. Terry and Albi also had a relative of Terry's visiting. It was her birthday and Albi made her an eis cake. In the past she has helped watch Albi and Terri's kids, and now works as a nanny in Ireland.
We sat outside while Albi barbecued a cut of pork that is a favorite in Germany, called schwenkbraten. Albi uses a stone barbecue, but his German neighbors all swear by a specific barbecue method - a grill that is suspended from a tripod, where the meat hangs over a wood fire. The barbecuer slowly swings the meat until it is ready. Albi and Terri were telling us that each weekend, if it's not raining, everyone is in their backyards barbecuing. This town barbecues so much that the air quality actually changes during barbecue season!
Darius and Mariah were playing with Matteo, Albi and Terri's second child. The game soccer turned into "swing set soccer". They kicked the ball while swinging and thought it was quite funny, of course it ended up in the neighbors' yard a few times. The language barrier seemed nominal - they had enough in common and followed each other's ques.
Belia and Max, Max being the youngest of Terry and Albi's kids, played with horse figures in the living room. Max loves horses and was very enthusiastic to show Belia his collection.
In true Denardi style the barbecue was a complete feast; a multitude of meats and salads. We enjoyed all the new tastes, and decided we need to try a barbecue like it at home.
We enjoyed Albi's eis cake and got a few more tips about places to see in the area. Terri recommended a medieval festival in Luxembourg, and we decided to go together on the upcoming Wednesday.
It had been a great get-together, and we were looking forward to seeing each other again in a couple days.
