Today I went to Nimbin and actually cant believe this place exists. It is literally like someone has collected up all the hippies in Australia and dumped them in Nimbin ts hysterical. Nimbin came to be during the Vietnam war when loads of people just dropped out of society to avoid the draft, it was also home of the original Aquarius festival. Now it's a small town decorated with bright colours and flowers, it has camper vans that have run into houses and just been left there as decoration. It is very cool and radiates peace and love.
I went to Nimbin Jims Alternative Tour which was really cool and I am glad I did it as opposed to getting the shuttle to Nimbin as the music and stories he gave really added to the experience. First stop was Bangalor markets which was really cool full of alternative products, vegan food stalls and usual tack- I could of spent a good while wandering there. Next stop was Nimbim itself. We pulled up just outside for a talk from our driver who explained the rules
·Only have half a cookie to start with or you will be looking for yourmissing limbs all the way home.
·When picking mushrooms always tap the stem to release the spores so that your fellow hippie has a fruitful harvest the next day.
I though he was joking but no within 2 minutes of being there I had been offered chocolate chip and buttermilk hash cookies. I would honestly have done it if I hadn't been on my own, but I think if I had decided to have more than the advised half a cookie and gotten myself in a state there would be nobody to come and find me so wasn't a good idea. However most of the bus got all the groceries they needed for a very mellow drive home. I honestly cant believe police allow this place to exist because its so obvious.
I came back to my hostel which is the coolest place in the world. Its called the arts factory and is again home of all the hippies. To give you a feel for the palace, instead of wild drum and base at the hostel bar, here people sit around smoking weed and playing bongo drums. I would say 75% of the guests have not washed their hair in maybe ten years and don't own a pair of shoes but it is soo cool. I am not sure I totally fit in but to be honest this area is all about mellowing out and so I am glad I chose to stay here.
