May, Sunday, Atlanta: For no good reason, I awoke at 5:45 this morning. Luckily for me my brother is an early riser. By the time I showered and dressed, he had made the morning coffee. We spent the morning with Joe, Mary and their granddaughter, Vivian. We all went to a garden center to help Mary pick out herbs and flowers for her new herb garden and then out to lunch. In the afternoon, Buzz and I went to visit our friend, Donna Malkin. She has a lovely home and it was a very good visit. We rounded out the day with dinner at Jami and Larry's home.
May, Monday, Atlanta: This morning Joe and Buzz and I took a walk to see the houses that are being built in a neighborhood at the end of their street. One of the homes is for sale. It is 10,000sf, has six bedrooms, six full baths, and two half baths. The price has just been reduced to $1.7 million. The other homes in the development are comparable! Back to reality, and we watched as Mary transformed a pile of cinder blocks into an herb and flower garden. Off to buy a few more herbs and have lunch before relaxing the rest of the day. Mary has gone to a meeting tonight, Joe is at his weekly poker game, and we are preparing to get back on the road tomorrow. This has been a lovely interlude.
May, Tuesday, Atlanta, GA to Raleigh, NC: Driving out of Atlanta this morning was a cinch. There wasn't much traffic and we arrived at Linda and Bill Bantz's home on Lake Wylie just south of Charlotte at one in the afternoon as planned. We had a delightful afternoon with these long time friends. Seven years between visits is entirely too long, but the time fell away as we picked up where we had left off. We left Linda and Bill around 3:30 and headed to Raleigh and a visit with cousins Judy and Bart. The traffic was horrendous, and our anticipated three hour drive took four. We were so relieved when the GPS took us off the interstate onto a secondary road. Judy and Bart have a lovely home in a country setting, and made us immediately at home. A delicious dinner with good wine and great conversation provided a relaxing end to the day.
May, Wednesday, Raleigh, NC: A relaxing morning on the screen porch was a welcome change from a day in the car. Buzz and Bart talked the gamut from atomic clocks and binoculars to tools and watches while Judy gave me a tour of their home and we caught up on family stuff. We drove into the city for a quick tour and a late BBQ lunch at The Pit....delicious. Back home we relaxed and talked late into the evening.
May, Thursday, Raleigh, NC to Fredericksburg, VA: It was difficult to leave Judy and Bart, but we took the family photo, and off we drove. We stopped at the antique malls that beckoned along the way and arrived at the home of good friends Joel and Noreen Rosenblatt in the late afternoon. They moved from Londonderry to be nearer their daughter and son-in-law and seem well settled in their new community. Noreen made a delicious dinner, we took a tour of their community and just enjoyed being with these old friends.
May, Friday, Fredericksburg, VA to Lewisburg, PA: Joel was the chef this morning. After a breakfast of sweet, vanilla flavored matzah brie we continued our drive north. Once again we chose to stay off the interstate highways and drove on Route 15. Once again we stopped to peruse the antiques along the way. Just north of Harrisburg, the road is parallel to the Susquehanna River. It is a very scenic drive. We had a picnic supper at a rest area on the riverbank.
May Saturday, Lewisburg, PA to Home: Our original plan was to be away until Monday. This morning when I asked Buzz what route he wanted to take, his reply was," The one that gets us home soonest." It turns out Lewisburg is the antique shop capitol of the area; so we poked around for the morning and headed home. It was a long drive, but we were happy to be back in our own bed.
We hope you have enjoyed this trip.
