As the Teton Mountains are so close to Yellowstone we had pay them a visit, albeit a fleeting one. The good weather persisted and we easily managed to get a spot at Colter bay campground, we even got our propane cylinder refilled which surprised us. Turned out we still had plenty left in there though. We hired a canoe for a few hours on Jackson Lake - this must be one of the most scenic paddles we have ever had. Lots of islands and hidden bays and a backdrop of the Grand Teton mountains - stunning. It was hot enough for an ice cream afterwards and a barbeque dinner. Another one of those pitch black sites though and apparently a bear family passes through here everyday. Quite daunting going to loo when it was dark. A very hot day but the night time was freezing. I was fighting Donna for custody of all the blankets as well as my share of the quilt. If it gets any colder we will be using our down sleeping bags that we have with us. The furnace (propane heater) went on as soon the alarm went off in the morning. We headed further south in the Teton NP, caught the shuttle boat across Jenny Lake and headed up Cascade Canyon on foot. After a steady climb the trail passes between towering giants of rock, the views are truly magnificent - and a few baby glaciers as well (can't get enough of those white beauties). A creek meanders through the canyon, bears and moose are present here, we kept our eyes peeled. We didn't see any but others did. Back at the jetty we didn't board one of the frequent boats just yet but headed up to Inspiration point and Hidden Falls. We hoped to hire another canoe on Jenny Lake but by the time we had got the boat back we were running out of time. On the way back to Tilly we met a Park Ranger with two wolf skins, 'you can touch them if you want to' she said. I told her what I really wanted was to wear a Rangers hat. This was only possible if I was sworn in as a junior ranger. On my knees I went so I was junior rangers height and I repeated the rangers promise which she said line at a time. My reward was to have my photo taken in her Rangers hat wrapped up in a wolfs skin! Donna decided she didn't want to wear the hat and most certainly didn't want a dead wolf wrapped around her, but I did persuade her to have a feel! Take two on ice creams and a barbeque. Moving on again tomorrow, shame we can't spend longer here. Still have other places to visit before heading south and autumn will soon change to winter. It's almost the end of the season here, in a weeks time the campgrounds are closing, the grocery store will shut, the Jenny Lake shuttle boat and all the canoe rentals finish. A few weeks after that and the gas station closes as well! These places really do shut down for the winter and don't open again until May.
