We were heading for South Dakota with a planned stop at Buffalo as it was too far to drive in one day. We had a choice of routes but opted to go back to Yellowstone before heading east as it seemed like it would be a more interesting route. We weren't wrong - Wyoming, wow! In Canada & Alaska we had explored the gold rush areas but this is cowboy country. The scenery was straight out of a western movie. Early afternoon we arrived in Cody, named after Col. William F Cody, aka Buffalo Bill. We decided to stop here for the night. We bagged a spot at the Ponderosa campground and then headed for the 'Old Trail Town', which stands on the actual site chosen by Buffalo Bill for Cody City in 1895. The buildings are original and have been moved from various locations in Wyoming and include a cabin from 'the hole in the wall' where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid would rendezvous. Around 2 years ago I read 'The American' by George McDonald Frazer. The book is purely fiction but is based around a guy named Harvey Logan who arrives in England a very rich man. The man has a past, and that is as a member of 'the hole in the wall gang'. In the Old Trail Town, I was pleasantly surprised to see a copy of an original wanted poster for Butch, Sundance and Harvey 'Kid Curry' Logan! Besides the buildings there were a mass of wagons, Indian, cowboy, trapper artifacts and grave sites of renowned trappers and frontiersman. When we consider the landscape that we have driven through today it is amazing to think of what the first white pioneers / frontiersman endured to explore this land - no maps, no RV's, no Walmart! Next stop was 'The Cody Firearms Experience'. We both tested our shooting skills in the laser arcade and then I had a go at firing a Winchester rifle with live ammo. Not any old Winchester but a Winchester'73 (as in that great movie 'Winchester'73' starring James Stewart). Actually, it wasn't an old Winchester but a faithful reproduction, but it was great to load, c*** and fire. You do have a choice of what firearm to shoot which includes a Gatling Gun! The one thing we missed out on here is the street shoot out performed every night except Sundays! It would also have been great to have seen a rodeo which they have every night in June, July and August but not in September - you can't be everywhere in peak season! Lots of wild west style buildings here and cowboy paraphernalia, even the shower curtains at Ponderosa had cowboys and Indians on them. There is a Buffalo Bill museum which has so much to see inside that admission tickets are valid for 2 days. We couldn't linger for a full day let alone two so we had to pass on that. This was an unexpected stop but well wort it, a day of just driving turned out to be a great day in the 'Old Wild West' - yeehaw.
