After a restless night in the Chevvy parking lot, with flashbacks of being on fire we sauntered down to Maccyd's for breakfast - Donna was in no mood to cook. What sort of a country is this - they only served iced tea - not hot tea! We hung around in the Chevvy dealership using the internet awaiting news of the damage to our pick up. The engine was fine it started no problem at all - the issue was the automatic transmission. Something had broken loose inside, cracking the casing. The transmission fluid had then leaked out straight onto the hot exhaust and set on fire. So the trail of oil we had left for a mile or so down the highway wasn't oil after all, but transmission fluid. It could be fixed, today was Saturday, we could be on our way again on Wednesday. The starting price was 4000 US Dollars plus anything else that needed repairing because of the fire - that was an unknown. After our tandem ride through Europe ending in a crash and our South America exploits finishing with 3 weeks of feeling ill and Salmonella in Bolivia this frightening episode in North America was the last straw. We have seen some wonderful places and had a great time but every continent sooner or later seems to involve a disaster. I actually spent a year in Asia back in 1992 -1993 and that trip was cut short because I contracted typhoid on a remote island in Indonesia and almost died. We both now feel the same way, let's go back home for some normality. Hawaii, New Zealand and Nepal can wait. So how do we get home from here - we have done a deal with the garage, they are buying the pick up and camper from us. We have booked flights from Moab to Denver and then Denver to London. In the meantime we are still living in Tilly parked up on the lot, using showers and toilets of a campground just a few minutes walk way. The garage mechanic has run an electrical lead out to us which we can plug into and we are trying to make a dent in our well stocked larder. Someone at the dealership is going to ferry us to the airport. It's hard to believe how our situation and desires have changed in such a short time, but then it's still hard to believe that we were standing by the roadside in a desert with flames licking the underneath of our lovely Tilly. Once again, we owe a debt of gratitude to the couple from Denver who stopped to help. Homeward bound very soon. From the year 2000 to 2016 we have spent every Christmas and New year but one in the Lake District. When we set off last August on our tandem we didn't expect to see the Lake district for a long time but after our crash in Croatia and flying back home late November, Christmas 2017 was also spent in the lake district. We haven't left Moab yet but we have today booked a cottage for Christmas 2018 in the Lakes once again - some traditions just don't want to be broken. Despite all the challenges we have faced we have no regrets about the trip and the good times far outweigh the bad. So many memories, so many photos - we may have posted a lot but there's plenty more besides those. We have also met a lot of great people and made friends along the way. Our last supper in Tilly, Chicken curry - yum!
