Last day of our 4-day wilderness safari. We left at 5.30am and drove over the 'Salar du Uyuni' salt flats. We were headed for Isla Incahuasi, a volcanic lump of rock strewn with cactus that stands above its dead flat surroundings. We paid our entrance fee and made our way to the summit before the sun appeared on the horizon. We were not alone, one 4WD after another parked up at the base. White, flat, barren landscape for 360 degrees. You could be forgiven for thinking it was snow but it's most definitely salt. Not just salt though, beneath the surface are vast deposits of Lithium. Bolivia is gearing up for worldwide increasing demands in lithium seeing as they have 70% of the worlds deposits. After sunrise we descended to find breakfast was laid out for us on a salt picnic table. After breakfast Nicholas headed us out to a quiet spot so he could take our cameras off us for more crazy photos. After finally leaving the salt flats we had our last lunch stop which was okayish. Shortly after we were on tarmac. We hadn't left the llamas behind though, they were all over the road. Nicholas and other drivers were hooting horns and trying to avoid llamas that were bolting across the carriageway. We passed through Uyuni (what a dive) to the 'cemetery of trains' - a huge amount of old steam trains lined up and left to rust, quite a spectacle. Back to Uyuni where we got dropped at the bus station, glad we weren't staying here for the night. We said our goodbyes and went in search of a ticket for a night bus to our next destination Sucre and a decent meal. The changing scenery and the wildlife of the 4-day tour is beautiful, dramatic and at times breath taking, but we were left hungry, very tired and with very few clean clothes. Not looking forward to the night bus, hopefully we can check in early tomorrow and crash out on the bed!
