November 7th - Kuala Lumpur Tower.
This morning we decided to have breakfast at the café next to our hostel. I had seen people with English type breakfasts eating there the day before, however we must have been too late, as the menus' we were given had no mention of breakfast on them! We didn't mind though as at the front of the café was a large selection of sweet and savory pastries. We each had a 'Danish croissant' (croissant with a hot dog in!) and chose to share something that looked like the Dim Sum dumplings I (Sam) just love!! It was similar and tasted good, although had a savory meat centre with peas etc…a different sort of breakfast!! To drink Tom chose a blueberry milkshake as it was highly recommended; it was tasty good, made with fresh blueberries, milk and ice cream. Would probably cost a bomb in England, what with blueberries being a super food and all but here it was about 1 pound. I chose a fruit juice that was equally as fresh and tasty good.
After breakfast we were ready to face the day ahead and set off for Kuala Lumpur Tower. It was a sunny day and pretty sticky walking in the heat, so it was nice when we came across an alternative route which involved walking through part of KL National Park, as the trees provided some shade for us…still sticky air though! We found it quite bizarre that just a few minutes before, we were walking through city scape, and now here we were walking amongst rainforest like greenery, yet still in the city! The trail directed us to the tower - although it was so tall it would have been virtually impossible not to get there, we could see it beyond the trees.
Our intention was to have afternoon tea in the revolving restaurant at the top of the tower, however it was a tad expansive so we opted for just the observation floor ticket instead. KL tower observation floor is higher than the bridge of the Petronas Towers where we were yesterday. At meters high the lift takes only seconds. These super fast lifts are great but you wouldn't want to come to an abrupt halt as you may end up on the ceiling. Once at the top we could see for miles. We had a little sit down to cool down whilst taking in the views and dodging school children on a trip who really starred at us! Are we really that different looking?!?
Having taken in the sights we moved on in search of a Dim Sum restaurant that was recommended in out Lonely Planet book. Again we were on foot, so by the time we finally found it, had worked up quite an appetite. At one point it felt like we were looking for something that was no longer there as we got to a shopping centre, where we thought it was and walked around the whole thing with no luck! Thankfully, when we came out and began walking past the shopping centre we found it was on the outside! At this point the sun had turned to heavy rain, so even though the place looked a bit posh for our budget, we decided to stay and eat. It turned out not to be that expensive anyway. The food was good but not quite what I was expecting from what I had read - there were less Dim Sum options than the book made out. After we had drunk so much Chinese Tea we nearly burst, we moved on. The rain had eased, so we continued on foot to an electrical centre Tom had read about, again in search of a PSP. As we were walking along Tom thought he saw lightening. Just as I was replying 'No, I don't think it was' a MASSIVE clap of thunder cut me off. It made me jump sooooo much!!! Tom said my face was a picture! We didn't buy anything in the electrical centre as again the prices were not far off those back home. Continuing on our way, heading back toward China Town, we came across a prison. It was scary looking - intimidating and looked like a prison should! This got us talking about English prisons and how they aren't hard enough these days; I don't expect you'd find TV's with Playstations in the prison we were stood just across the road from! Definitely think people in KL would think twice before committing any crime, knowing where they might end up. Unlike back home where they have it all - human rights, pah!!!
Later on this evening we found a better Internet café, which was up a small staircase off the main street. There were two rooms, one for gamers that was all loud and the other for quietness. We paid for two computers to try and catch up on some blogging. After getting down to work, the room being fairly quiet, we soon heard that god awful nose noise that people of Asian culture seem to make! Could this person not hear themselves?!? Every few minutes the pig like snort sounded…arghhh!!!
Next stop was dinner; it was getting a bit late so we decided to go back to the same place we ate at the night before, stopping on route to get some roasted chestnuts from the street seller - yum! The other thing that drew us back was the prawn dish we loved, so we ordered them again. The problem was, when the dish came it was different. It transpired the night before we were given the wrong dish but obviously didn't realise, so when we ordered the same again and actually got the right dish, it was wrong! It didn't matter too much though as the prawns were equally as good - but I was a little disappointed. Last night we were entertained watching the night market stall owners but tonight they were packing up early. We had heard tomorrow was a public holiday so maybe this was the reason. We were still somewhat amused, however at the fact cars were passing us just feet from the table - lovely!!
After dinner it was back to our horror movie type room to bed. Having no private bathroom I went off to the toilet and when I came back found Tom on the floor with a tissue killing ant like insects (he was trying to get them before I got back, so I didn't see)!! What a great nights sleep we were going to have!
