We arrived in Sucre around 8.30pm at Travellers Guesthouse and soon went out for food in Florins which we had been recommended. I went for a local dish, Pique a la Macho which is meat, chicken, sausage, chips and sauce based meal and it has to be the first meal ever that i have got no where near finishing. It was giant!
Next morning we returned to Florins for an amazing breakfast and after i went for a stroll through town to take in the city. The city itself is beautiful, there are colonial style white washed buildings with lush green parks in between. Its very laid back and cool with a healthy university population too. I walked to the top of the town where there is a viewpoint overlooking the city and also discovered the market.
The market sold anything and everything and was so cheap you felt guilty buying stuff. After lunch at the market i met with Mel and Gosta to go and see the biggest collection of dinosaur footprints in the world., there are over 5000 of them!
The footprints themselves are on a near vertical wall because as the Andes mountains folded over time it forced the rock upwards. The mountain where they are located is owned by the quarry that operates there and that is how the footprints were discovered. Somehow despite being known internationally the footprints are not protected and the quarry and still dig there if they want to. I guess this is Bolivia though and its a bit behind the rest of the world. It had better protect the footprints soon though because only 2 years ago a huge section fell away taking the clearest prints with it.
Upon return we returned to Florins where i had a very tasty llama steak before going to place called Joyride in the centre of town for a couple more drinks.
Next morning i headed to Florins (where else) for a full english breakfast which went down a treat even if they cant do baked beans over here!I had a pretty lazy day hanging around the hostel chatting and frequenting the market every now and then for a fruit shake. It already felt like i could live in this cuty for a long time it was so nice. That evening i went for a pizza in a small restaurant instead (should have gone to Florins) and watched Imagine Argentina in the free cinema which is about the dictatorship in Argentina when lots of political opponents and people disappeared never to be found again.
The next day i thought should be more productive, and having said goodbye to Mel and Gosta the night before i headed to the Spanish school for 4 hous of spanish lessons in the morning. For one on one lessons it was approximately 4pd an hour!! My spanish came on a lot (it started at nil mind), so much so that when we were finished i booked 2 more hours' worth in the afternoon. In between i went to the market for food once more and booked a flight to Rurrenabaque for a couple of days time. The next 2 hours worth went well though so i covered the present tense, past tense and future tense in one day, rather than the 3 weeks that it is meant to take on the program! After my lessons it was time for some salsa, which turned out to be with my Spanish teacher. The lessons were good fun, but i think after 7 hours of my company the teacher was glad to see my go for the day. That evening a fwe of us from the hostel went out to a club above an empty shopping centre. The view from the terrace over Sucre was awesome, but the club was empty as it was the week after carnival and apparently no one has any money left after. The club also decided it was a good idea to set the bar on fire (like properly on fire) every few minutes. Whilst this was quite cool (and dangerous) it also meant the amount of bar space was reduced, so you had to queue for drinks even in an empty bar...
Next morning i returned to Florins, drawn not only by another full english breakfast but also by the lure of the 6 nations. For some reason ESPN decided that only 75 minutes of the Wales v Italy game was necessary though so with 5 minutes still to play i was treated to some Bolivian adverts instead. After the England v France game i returned to the hostel and chilled out until my overnight bus to La Paz. The bus was a cama bus, my first of south america, which basically means the bed turns into a bed - a full on bed so it was a great nights sleep when we finally got going.
Unfortunately, a couple of Bolivians had decided to start drinking on the back of the bus which was an issue with the drivers. More of an issue was that they also didnt have tickets and refused to move. The result was that after 40 minutes of rather heated discussion between the culprits, the drivers, the baggage handlers, security and the police officers they finally removed themselves from the vehicle and we departed without them.
