Tom - I've enjoyed looking to see where you've been, and it's brought back memories of my travels in Eastern Europe.

<>I spent about three weeks in Czechoslovakia (as it was then) when I was 19. I went with three friends and we stayed in hostels and university rooms in Prague, Bratislavia and the Tatra Mountains. It was great, and cost very little, but I do remember getting very tired of eating peppers in Bratislava.

<><>A year later later I did an overland trip from London to Tehran and back. We went out via Belgium, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia (as it was then), Bulgaria (but they didn't allow us to stop, so we drove through the night) and Turkey, back through Greece etc and I remember Thessaloniki very well. I agree with you about Istanbul. I thought at the time how brilliant it was and how I'd love to go back, but I haven't (yet). Going out to the islands was particularly good, and very cheap as I recall.

Finally I went to Hungary a couple of years ago. We stayed at the Gellert and I had the most scary massage of my life - that plus the wonderful architecture and water features made for an experience not to be missed.

Looks like Turkey is still the wonderful place it always was. I remember spending a couple of holidays over there in the late 80s Hired a renault 12 and drove 3000 miles in two weeks. Pamukale was brill and the town of Side was terrific. I guess you should go down to chill at Bodrum which is the place to be in 07.
