Set off from Queenstown and a slight regret that we hadn't booked another night as so buzzy and so much to do and experience!
On the way out we diverted a few miles to visit Arrowtown (Gold rush town); the town is pristine and has an affluent air about it. So interesting as the traditional settler main street had been retained (although would have been even better if pedestrianised as the presence of cars spoilt the effect somewhat) and Arrowtown is also home to the Chinese settlement. In the 19th century the NZ government advertised for civilians to come help with the excavation of the new found gold and a Chinese settlement was established although sadly there was great deal of prejudice and this culminated in segregation which continued until the 1950's!
Oh by the way everywhere we travel in the south island there is a profusion of fruit on sale - fruit export is big industry in this part of the world. Whilst in Arrowtown we purchased the best cherries ever and I only mention this as my mum would have loved them - and yes I did keep them in the fridge Mum! Xxx
This part of the south island is more barren and we likened it to the Devon moors of Dartmoor and Bodmin and we decided to stop off at Alexandra where we found the "Shaky Bridge" over the river Manuherikia and had most probably the best salmon Panini ever!
Dunedin is a university town with some great Victorian buildings and architecture but sadly it seems much unloved and has little character or charm! It does however have a brewery and yes we visited and finished with dinner and a good evening in the brewery building! Oh and another redeeming fact is that it features in the 'Guinness Book of Records' as having the steepest street in the world - we walked it and it is indeed very steep!
