Hi Everyone
We are currently in a small beach town called Mui Ne. The town is actually the windiest place on earth - and so is very popular with kite surfers. We are a bit scared to swim in the sea for fear of being mown down by one of them!
We arrived here yesterday from Nha Trang - another beach town. Nha Trang's beach was very beautiful and we both went swimming in the lovely warm water. However, the weather here is so hot that we get burnt if we stay out too long, and it is literally unbearably hot at times! We are really longing for just one day of cold or rain - however crazy that may sound!
Before, Nha Trang we were in Hoi An. Hoi An is a UNESCO site, a very historic little town by the sea. The streets are really quaint and there were lots of nice places to eat and drink. On our last night there, we ate in a restaurant which had a beach on it's roof! Our hotel in Hoi An was a little crazy though. We had a hello kitty toilet, swan towels and two kissing mice on a pillow on the bed - not to mention the silky kimonos in the cupboard! It was nice enough though and we enjoyed our 2 nights there.
Before Hoi An we were in Hue, which was a bit of a boring town. Its claim to fame is the Imperial city - which we went to see. However, as the walled city has four gates on four very long walls, we thought we could enter through any of them. Turns out we were wrong and walked miles around the edge, 3 sides of the square, to get to the entrance. Inside the imperial city, it was basically just grass as it was bombed by the Americans during the Vietnam war - grrr.
The real story is how we arrived in Hue. We cleverly decided to take the 12 hour overnight train from Hanoi to Hue. We thought perhaps it would actually be quicker as the night buses are constantly stopping and going miles off route to collect chickens etc...
How wrong we were!
It was THE WORST JOURNEY we have ever been on. Imagine the worst train you have ever seen in your life and times it by ten and that is how bad it was. AND IT WAS LATE!
There are no photos as Tom was that devastated that he didnt reach for the camera - just shows how bad the situation was. It was full of old, coughing, diseased, wretching locals who insisted on shouting at each other and eating the local speciality, part formed duck feotus. The chairs were disgusting and the lap tables kept falling on our knees. We didnt sleep a wink and arrived in Hue very hot and bothered and needing the toilet - needless to say we were too scared to use the toilets on the train!
We have resolved never to use the train again in Asia as shortly after Tom got a throat infection (from aforementioned diseased locals) and I have now caught it too - GREAT!
Not much better was the overnight sleeper bus we took to Nha Trang - though it must be said it was MUCH better than the train. Only thing was it was impossible to sleep because of the bumpiest roads on earth!
Anyway, apart from the train, bus journeys and throat infections we are having the time of our lives!! We are leaving Mui Ne tomorrow for the crazy streets of Ho Chi Mihn City AKA Saigon. We have 2 nights there before a short trip in Cambodia to see Angkor and then back to Bangkok! HALLELUJAH!
We hope everyone is well and that the weather is wonderfully cold over there - wish we could send some of our excess heat over!
Lots of Love
