We have arrived in Phuket, where we will be staying for the next couple of weeks. Phuket is lovely and not as busy as Bangkok. The air is cleaner and smells of sea water rather than petrol. Our hotel is nice and we have already tested out the pool, its nice and cool which is a welcome as it is very hot here. The beach is a five minute walk away and again is beautiful with lovely blue waters. There is lots of little shops, restaurants and bars around so at the moment we are just taking it easy!
We took a trip to Phuket Zoo where we were greeted with a flower necklace. It was amazing to see the amount of crocodiles that clearly were the main attraction at the zoo as there were loads of them. You would look in the enclosure and think there would be a couple but oh no in some of the enclosures the crocs were all piled up onto each other - there would be about fifty medium sized crocs!! As you will see from the pics we had a great day and had fun with the Orangutan and feeding the elephants. The Crocodile show was insane and so were the men who were in there with them - at one point one of the men grabbed this massive croc and just casually lifted him in the air like this was something you would usually do. The Elephant show is great and you just can't believe the things they do until you see it. One elephant even rode a tricycle!! And I never knew how much elephants liked to dance until I came here - you just pop some music on and the rhythm just makes them groove on down!
We also went into Phuket town for a couple of hours. It was more of a shopping mall actually but was a really cool one with a big fish pond in the centre with loads of tropical fish!!
The Big Buddha of Phuket was also a fabulous sight to see. Set on the top of a hill the people of Thailand started to build this Big Buddha two years ago and is a present for the King from the people. It is not finished yet but they are hoping it will be in the next three years. I did ask if they could quickly take the scaffolding down so I could take a picture but apparently no can do!! Shame! The views were superb and you could see Karon, Kata and Chalong (which are three beaches along the coast!) and also all the little towns around them. It took a good 15 minutes to get to the top of the hill on a very bumpy road but it was worth it.
The Green Man is a very good english pub in Thailand and so we thought we would go there for an evening. As usual there was a band (as there are in most bars it seems) and they belted out a few good tunes.A couple of people got up to sing with the lead singer of the band and it was all very good until one American man challenged Tom to go up and sing well that was it. Give him a mic and up he goes and sings New York New York by Frank and the crowd absolutely loved it and after shouting for him to do One More and so what does he sing Tom Jones Why Delilah and finishing off the evening later with Mustang Sally! Was Fab! I had one too many Malibus and fortunately for the people of Thailand I did not get up to sing!!
