Tobes on the Go!
What should one do when in Yorkshire? well, visit York of course.
Charlotte and I drove to York (well near, we did Park & Ride) went to the Merchant Adventurers Hall (this is a great example of Tudor wattle and daub construction), despite its definite Tower of Pisa lean.
Then onto The Shambles - old laneways where it is actually possible to shake hands out of your respective upper floor windows with your neighbour across the way - should the urge take you.
Went to this great china shop where even Charlotte had to duck her head in places... I think I was lucky enough not to bash my head on a beam, for a change.
After lunch at The Slug and Lettuce - this one wasn't an old pub, think Daisy's or The Glenferrie [don't ask how long it took for they to bring out my Cranberry and Apple Wensleydale (it's cheese) panini, but it was worth the wait.] The nearly whole bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc I polished off (Charlotte was driving you see) did lessen the annoyance though.
The York Minster was amazing, in some ways I would say even more impressive than Westminster Abbey, but I think this is 'cos you get a much better sense of the proportions involved as it feels less enclosed... the view from the top of the tower is worth the 285 (I think) steps to get there.
We entered one of the sections of the city walls at Monkbar and walked around to near the National Theatre, from there it was into the Musuem Gardens and queueing (once more) at Betty's - a traditional tea house. Unfortunately, after waiting for some 30 or 40 minutes, which you just have to do if you want to eat there, it was getting a little late for High Tea - nearly 7pm at this point, so we settled on tea and a sweet.
Then off to Charlottes parent's house on the edge of the Moors (the name of the village excapes me) to pick up Bracken and Holly - Rob and Charlotte's labradors - another Tetley's, then a Boddington's (no DB, it was no homage, it was all they had left!) and more Yorkshire humour.
By this stage in was around 10pm and Charlotte and I were somewhat peckish. It was decided that I needed to experience a proper 'English' curry, so off to the local Indian in Pickering.
[Note to self: don't change to lager (Kingfisher) after nearly a bottle of wine and two cans of bitter]
Despite that, the food was great, even if I couldn't finish my second pint... and I managed to fall asleep as Charlotte was talking to me on the drive home... oops.
