There are 5 other volunteers at the home from America and Canada. This weekend we went with them to Lake Nuirvasha. Its up in the Rift Valley, and is hotter and dryer than in Ngong. We stayed in dormitories by the lake, in a very european tourist place. It felt like we could have been in England and one girl in the restaurant even had an Exeter Uni jumper on! On saturday night we saw a hippo and heard some others. It came up really close to the restaurant, they are huge! We also saw lots of monkeys. On sunday we hired bikes and a guide and went through Hell's Gate National Park. Its the only national park where its safe to walk or cycle. We saw loads of animals really close up. We saw Maasai giraffes, zebra's, warthogs, gazzelles, cape buffallo's (these are the biggest killers in Africa!) and we saw about 50 baboons with babies, one jumped over the fence so we had to run away!We also went on a walk through a gorge, which is just outside the park. It was amazing, and has been used as a film set for tomb raider. Our guide helped with the wires etc when it was being filmed. There one place in the gorge where you have to climb through a waterfall and the water is really hot. In some places you can see steam and the water is too hot to touch! Our guide was really good, he's called Josephet and he may be coming to England next year. One thing he said was really funny, he said the scottish accent isn't a language, its a problem, because he cant understand it at all!We got to and from the area using matatu (kenyan buses, they are basically just vans with seats in them and many are falling apart). They are cheap to go on, but the ride is bumpy, sweaty and sometimes scary!
