Dean and Claire's t'internet travel journal
Hi y'all
Well we are in Vietnam, and have been for the past three days. We took the bus from Phnom Pehn across the boarder into Saigon, where we stayed for one day. Saigon is a pretty huge city and a bit manic, but it's okay because they have great chocolate cookies and cheap internet, so this compensates for the madness.
During our day in Saigon we took a trip to the Cu Chi tunnels, which were used as hideout for the Viet Cong guerillas during their war with America. We got the opportunity to explore the tunnels, though some were really narrow and you practically had to crawl on your hands and knees to get through in pitch black darkness. Not much fun for those with claustraphobia!
Last night we travelled to Trang, a beach resort (Yay for the beach!) and today we took a boat tour which was all a bit mad. We first stopped at an island for snorkelling action, before being engaged in a boat sing-a-long, where the tour guides brought out instruments and started playing their own versions of Beatles classics and a Vietnamese song (which could've been the national anthem but I can't be sure). They then handed round song sheets so we could all sing along to a song they'd improvised about the trip (It reminded me of assembley at school, though I doubt school children sing about getting drunk at sea...) Finally they played 'La Bamba', and somehow Dean and I ended up dancing on a table in the middle of the boat while one of the tour guides shook his tambourine. Like I said, it was a strange day...
After lunch the guides set up an inflatable bar in the middle of the ocean, and we floated around in inflatable rings, supping red wine. Now, some people may consider it dangerous to swim while intoxicated, but not the Vietnamese. Just for the record I only had one...Mum.
