Tilly's Latino Travels
I was brave and tried guinea pig and alpaca too. Eating the guinea pig was a bit more traumatic seeing the whole thing flattened on my plate with the jaw looking a bit dislocated and poor little face looking up at me as I tucked in. The taste wasn't too bad, was very litttle meat on it, and not sure it would fill you up very much. Alpaca on the other hand was a bit more tasty - meat was a bit like pork, but more dry - could maybe see myself ordering it for myself one day, but I was perfectly happy with my safe choice of stuffed peppers last night!
Today we went to see Juanita which is one of the most well preserved mummies in the world and was discovered on one of the volcanoes near here as an offering to the gods. She is believed to have been between 12-14 years old and it was amazing how well preserved all her clothing had been as she was frozen. Apparently all her organs were all perfectly preserved too and so the experts were even able to take cells from her to tell that her last meal had been beans!
Arequipa is a really pretty place to wander around and went round a beautiful convent called Santa Catalina which had the most stunning views of the convent with the volcanos and snow capped mountains in the background.
At an altitude of 2000m at the moment, and although I'm not feeling it at the moment I decided to start drinking the coca tea thismorning at breakfast as it's supposed to aid the altitude sickness. Should be reaching up to 5000m over the course of the next week so thought the sooner I started the better.
Take care everyone, and thanks for all the emails keeping me updated - all very much appreciated.
