Today was all about wine!! And some cheese. That is all ;-)
Okay okay - we have some details to share ...
We departed the hostel at 1100 hours and over the next 6 hours visited 4 winery's and had lunch in Frankchoek. We sampled 21 different wines and 8 different cheeses. At the first estate, Simonsip, we were taken on a cellar tour where we both learnt more than we expected. Although I have visited many vineyards and winery's this was the first time to be taken through the process from beginning to end. This is also where we were shown how to uncork champagne with a sword ;-)
Second place, Fairview in Paarl, was where we combined wine tasting with cheese tasting. This was where I enjoyed most of what I tasted. Most people bought cheese or bread because these are two food items that have been total luxuries for us over the last 10 weeks.
Lunch was nice and the third winery Dieu Donne had stunning views of the surrounding mountains although I only liked one of the wines I tasted there. Our final vineyard, Boschendal, was en route back to town and we tasted Blanc de Noir for the first time - appreciating it as an interesting wine we bought a bottle to enjoy over dinner.
Back at the hostel we had a local dinner - curry served inside fresh bread loaves. And people partied with pool, dancing and much laughter.
