Up early for a game drive. We were changing campsites within the national park so the whole day was about checking out the wild life and playing on the immense salt pan. The salt pan is the centre of the park and when you drive along and look at across it appears endless. A horizon shimmers in the distance. We had a lot of fun doing silly photos. The sun was relentless. We stopped in the middle of the day at a campsite to have lunch in the shade and go for a swim. The afternoon game drive we were on the lookout for large cats - in this we were disappointed but there were elephants and rhino to enjoy. As well as multitudes of gazelles, wildebeest and giraffes.
We arrived at the campsite in time for the sun to set. There was a tower that had been built as part of the German forts many years ago. We raced to the top where we had a fabulous 360 degree view as the sun gradually sunk below the horizon in a red haze.
After dinner we gathered all our warm stuff including sleeping bags and blankets and set off for the waterhole at this campsite. We were thrilled as we arrived to see 2 black rhinos with their little baby and a few elephants. As we sat down we saw more and more elephants arriving ... 36 in total. It was fascinating to watch the hierarchy at the waterhole. Rhino gave way to elephants. Giraffes waited until almost all the elephants had gone - although the rhino also made room for them. The hyenas gave way for everyone. It was a truly amazing experience. Tessa stayed out until 0030 just taking it all in. A total privilege to share these moments.
