Day 4 - about 270km
We got an early start from Ballarat and were on the road by 8.30am. We very quickly decided to sack the car GPS which seemed to be sending us the opposite direction to what we wanted to go. Sanity prevailed and we cut across country roads towards the coast.
We had a rest stop in a little town called Camperdown which had a great little bakery that looked like it did a roaring trade.
We hit the Great Ocean Road at Port Campbell, and travelled west about 10mins to have a look at the remains of "London Bridge" which partially fell down about 25 years ago.
After this, we turned around, headed back through Port Campbell and continued east along the Great Ocean Rd, having a look at Loch Ard Gorge (site of a famous shipwreck) and of course the 12 Apostles. Surprisingly there were no picnic facilities at the 12 Apostle visitors centre, so we made our lunch from the back of the car in the car park, before wandering down to take in the most spectacular of scenery. The sheer cliffs were amazing when the sun was shining directly onto them. Such wild coastline.
After looking at it from all angles (and having a tourist spill her hot chocolate all over the back of Ms10's pants and shoes, with a bit of bonus splash over Ms4's and Chris's shoes for good measure - sigh!), we headed back to the car to continue east to Apollo Bay for the night.
We arrived at Apollo Bay mid afternoon, found ourselves somewhere to stay, and headed off across the road to check out the beach. Our little wander turned into quite the walk - heading up the beach to the boat harbour, wandering out towards the break wall, and looping back through town again. A highlight would have to have been the seal we spotted playing around the break wall! The kids squealed with excitement.
After our hour and a half dawdle up the beach and back, we hopped in the car and headed back to the boat harbour to the fisherman's co-op for a fish and chip dinner. It was gorgeous sitting above the marina, watching the changing colours of the setting sun and growing night sky. We had the bonus of a lunar eclipse as well. There was a bit too much cloud on the horizon to see it to start with, but once it got a bit higher in the sky, the kids got a lesson in what eclipses were and enjoyed watching the moon gradually "reappear".
We were so lucky with the weather today. There were some showers about - but they were only about while we were in the car. When we were out looking at the scenery, the sun was either out or partially out, and while it was cool, it wasn't cold, and there was little wind to speak of.
We haven't quite decided where we're headed tomorrow - somewhere towards Queenscliff / Sorento, but TBC.
