Day 10
Winton
Today we got up and going and were on the road by 8am to drive the 110kms out to Lark Quarry - the home of the dinosaur stampede (fossilised dinosaur footprints), and one of the prime reasons we have headed this far north.
We made it out there in time for the 10am tour, which explained the background to how the footprints were found, and what sort of dinosaurs they think were responsible for the tracks.
After the tour, we took a short hike around the Mesa. It's such amazing scenery - red rocks, spinafex grass, and hints of green from the sparse stands of trees.
We enjoyed a picnic lunch at the "quarry" before driving the 110kms back to town. One the return trip we were spoiled, seeing a mumma emu and her six chicks cross the road. The chicks were very small, so possibly on one of their first journeys from the nest?
We had planned to spend the afternoon wandering some of the other buildings in town, including one which boasted a diorama of the stampede, except that being a small country town, everything bar the pub shut at 1pm because it was Saturday. Given it was about 32 degrees, we had no choice but to go to the pub for a cold drink (and to enjoy their air con for half an hour).
After that it was back to the caravan park for a swim in their pool. And a wind down. The kids got a chance to feed some baby goats that the lady who owns the park was keeping - which was a bit of excitement for the afternoon.
Tomorrow we turn around and "head back". We will head back along the same path for a short distance tomorrow, before heading back a different route to the one that got us here.
