Day 4. City exploring! Museum! Disappointing food!
Not as much to report today, as we had a quieter day exploring the city. We went for breakfast at a restaurant that was f***ING MILES away (I sweated A LOT), and it was an interesting experience having some rather spicy enchiladas for brekkie. Still, when in Rome...
(Just a quick note - I'm being f***ing censored. These asterisks aren't mine! So I couldn't f***ing swear, even if I f***ing wanted to!)
After our Mexicana breakfast, we popped our big hats back on and had a wander around the city. We ventured down as far as the Benito Juarez market, which was really bustling and colourful and vibrant. Sure, some of it resembled Longsight market, but the fruit and veg stalls and street-food vendors were very exciting. Andrew especially liked the huge varieties of chillies!
After some more wandering (I've attached some s*** photos...) we went to the Oaxaca Cultural Museum, for a bit of cul-cha. At some airport-style security Andrew had to surrender his umbrella, his apple headphones and his green highlighter (weird), and then we started looking round the really excellent museum. It charts the history of the city from the ancient Zapotec times, through invasion and colonisation by the Aztecs and the Spanish, to the much more recent dictatorship and revolution. All of this is housed in a beautiful Dominican monastery adjoining the cathedral. It was really great!
Before coming to Mexico, we'd read that Mexicans are big on breakfast and lunch, but eating in the evening is not so much of a big deal. I took this with a pinch of salt, but it turns out they REALLY don't care about dinner! We tried three different restaurants that had been recommended, and they were all closed. As we wandered around, somewhat aimlessly, we realised that most restaurants were closed or closing, apart from Domino's pizza, and an all-you-can-eat Oaxacan buffet. Sadly, we didn't opt for Domino's...It was maybe one of the worst meals I've ever had! Hey ho! We salvaged the evening with a couple of drinks in the tranquil hotel bar, and then skipped our way to bed. (Andrew finished the evening listening to news about exit polls...I tried to block it out! If the polls are right, we might not come home!)
Check out the photos! More tomorrow! Xx
