We arrived in Yangon after a tuk tuk, bus to BK, taxi to the wrong airport, taxi to the right airport and a flight. Complete with $400 fresh new notes each and a free shirt from the money exchange we were ready for anything!
We stepped through the time portal and entered another world, few have been and many are on their way. After some deliberation we decided on a taxi to the old town??? In Yangon. For a reason only known to a few Burmese the decision has been taken to operate right hand drive cars on the right hand side of the road, this leads to a unique style if driving to say the least! Near misses and incredibly long stop lights couldn't stop our arrival in the centre. A mix of India without the filth and Thailand without the development it was a mixture of white cars, dilapidated buildings and street food. Hotels barely standing were charging $60 a night as is the result of the tourism boom in Myanmar. We squirrelled ourselves away for the night in a charming and social hostel called Okinawa. A delicious taste of India on the street we were reliving the motherlands dal makhani. A chance meeting with a Finnish man and his over active vocal cords set us up for an entertaining evening under the stars, under the smog. Our decision to leave Yangon was swift and easy, the bright lights of cities no longer had a draw for us. A night bus to Inle Lake was the choice and the hope of lakeside living the plan.
