This morning I got up at 4a.m. to watch sunrise over Angkor Wat.
Not being a morning person, this is momentous for me, but it was definitely worth it. We tuk-tuk-ed along the pitch black roads, then joined the hordes of people making the pilgrimage across the huge moat into the inky darkness of Angkor. Positioned by the lake, I got a great spot - front row right in front of the temple. Slowly but surely the sky changed from ebony, to midnight blue, to purple, pale sky blue then as the sun appeared a stunning red ring around it cast pinks into the morning sky.
There must have been 200 people there, jostling for space to take photos, but I felt like I was the only one. Truly amazing.
Angkor Wat is stunning; really well-preserved by comparison to the other temples you really get a sense of what it was like. Then we went on to Ta Prohm, a ruin overgrown with huge trees which have forced their way through the stones, disfiguring the buildings. Really impressive; very Tomb-Raider.
Stopped off at Ta Som and Neak Pean on the way back to the guesthouse and I've accepted that early mornings aren't for me... I'm off for a nap.
