I am sat in an internet cafe after a 'wild Friday night out' involving a mexian, free drinks in a bar and then a McD's ice cream! I need to retract about 4 days to fill you in on why this crazy night isnt the usual Friday!
Before I left Cairns I did a lovely jog along the esplanade and then did a free yoga class on the beach front. It was lovely, so relaxing and a good gossip with other people in the group. I then went out for a diet coke break with a couple fo the ladies before heading back to chill at the lagoon. (This reminds me, Claydo the diet coke cans are HUGE! you would love them!)
The following day I went to the Daintree Rainforest with a small group. We stopped at a habitat retreat and i finally cuddled a koala called Glen, he was so cute and very well behaved. I also fed some more kangaroos, at one point I had 2 feeding from my hand, awww bless - I cant believe how much I have changed from running a mile from any animal to actively encouraging it! We did briefly walk through a place with birds and I was really freaked out so at least im not changing too much! I also touched a snake and a crocodile - they didnt feel anything like a handbag which is what I thought!
From the habitat we went on to Moram Gorge which is basically a big river, it was great jumping into the water and then going down the river - kinda like white water rafting but without the boat!! The tour guide we had was a real character, he was also the bus driver and when we left the gorge he went really fast through puddles to soak pedestrians - it was slightly evil but really funny at the same time! He picked a piece of sugar cane from the side of the road to let us taste it which was cool!
We then went on a crocodile cruise as well on this trip and saw a huge daddy crocodile at the side of the river - it was about 4 metres long and was just sunbathing, got a wicked picture of it. Then we saw about 4 baby crocs but they werent as exciting and as for the snake we saw, I wasnt impressed, I wanted to see another big one but I should be thankful that I at least got to see one!
Following this was the two highlights of my trip, Im not sure why but one of them was a ferry that you went on to cross the crocodile river. It was awesome, I went slightly delirious on this ferry it was only about 5 cars this ferry could take and it was literally like a floating road and we were only on it for 5 mins but I just loved it! The other huge highlight was cape tribulation which is where the rainforest meets the reef and it is just so stunning, it was lovely. All the trees and the white sand, we had a blast writing in the sand, it was right up my street. I didnt want to leave!
Now if I said to you that we were going to spend 9 hours on a bus it would fill most people with dread but our first bus journey out of Cairns to Airlie beach and the Whitsunday Islands was one of the most fun journies I have ever had! The first 2 hours was great scenery and we saw the devestation caused by Cyclone Yasi which was pretty bad. Then we watched the film Australia (the one with Nicole Kidman) which was good, i cried my eyes out over it though! But it was slightly sereal as our tour guide suddenly went look left and we drove past where they filmed it..... Following the film we did a little bit on the microphone each about ourselves. Im afraid to say my 'Pollyanna' tendencies have totally come out and i have earned this nickname for myself! I cant help being positive people!!!
When we finally arrived in Airlie beach we boarded a boat straight away which wasnt what I expected, it was much nicer. It was a proper sailing boat and the cabins were all underneath. We set sail and we had a great night on the boat just chilling. Then we went to bed and a huge storm came and rocked the boat - needless to say we were all pretty sea sick from it but we managed to continue on to Whitehaven Island. This beach was ace - really clear water, the only funny bit was when it started to pour we were in the middle of a game of rounders so we just continued playing. I saw it as a free shower as we had just been in the sea and we couldnt shower on the boat (see where Im coming from about the Pollyanna thing?!).
That night on the boat it was time for our goon-a-colada party! Basically we had all brought on wine and we put it all in a jug, added fruit, apple juice and blackcurrent juice - a kinda punch and played some tunes! It was a self made nightclub and great fun. We also got to see the stars, which was pretty fantastic as at this point it was clear skies. The clear sky lasted all of 2 hours and another storm brewed which woke us all during the night with the loud crashing but no damage was done!
We set sail back to shore following our 2 nights on the boat and raced another boat back. The boat was tipping so much at times it was horizontal but no one fell in and we all felt we dont need to go to a water theme park now! We lost the boat race though :o(
Here in Airlie beach we went for mexian food, free beer at a bar and then McDs for ice cream, we are all shattered from too much sea air!!
Tomorrow its a rodeo night, silly me thought that meant a mechanical bull in bar but apparently the bull is live......
