The shanghai heavens have opened! It's been chucking it down today.
We met some of the group to say goodbye this morning but gutted to have missed frank & ellie, the older couple who we got really friendly with - they had to leave early to catch their boat to japan :-( They have our email addresses so I'll email them when we get home. Georgina was the only one leaving a bit later like us so the three of us decided to visit the JinMao Tower and go for afternoon tea at cloud 9 - the 87th floor of the grand hyatt. We had heard of the psychedelic tourist tunnel that takes you from one side of the river to the tower side so thought it would be fun. We got in the wee capsule and it started to move, lots of neon lights inflatable things and futuristic music - really cheesy! It lasted about 3 mins and we decided it was just a crap tourist rip off. Visibility wasn't great but we thought it might still be worth a visit to the tower for tea. The lift to 87 was really quick & my ears popped on the way up. We couldn't see a thing as we were so high up and practically in the clouds - bad weather so no view which was maybe just as well cos I was a bit nervous in the first place and think I wouldve been a wreck if I could actually see outside. Afternoon tea menu wasn't what we expected - chicken satay, spring rolls etc. We'd had our hearts set on cucumber sarnies so decided to give it a miss and wait until we got to hong kong. Before we left the hyatt we went to view the hotel from 87th floor down to lobby (about 54th floor) - I could hardly look over the balcony as it was so high & i was too scared to lean right over to look down. Gail took some fab photos. We had lunch at Subway instead then back to hotel to collect our bags.
We said goodbye to Georgina then got the metro to the maglev station, maglev is the worlds fastest bullet train. It was fab - 8 mins to pudong airport and top speed was 436km per hour. It took us straight to terminal and we checked the bags in for hong kong.
