We left the Wild Boar Inn behind as we made our way to Edinburgh (on another gorgeous sunny spring day).
First a cruise on one of the lakes which was quite enjoyable and then off to a section of Hadrian's Wall near Carlisle. We weren't quite sure what we would find - the wall was built from the west to east coast of England in about 120AD by Emperor Hadrian (funnily enough). It was in much better condition at that point than expected and there were also the remains of a Roman fort. Another piece of history!
We then stopped at Rosslyn Chapel just south east of Edinburgh and this was also very interesting, but for us not a result of the 'Da Vinci Code' movie. Amongst other items of significance, it contained the tomb of a 13th century Knights Templar.
We reached Edinburgh and unfortunately the cooler weather set in. Nevertheless with only a touch over 24 hrs in the city we hit Calton Hill with the Nelson and National monuments, Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile (obligatory tourist stops) and a couple of other interesting places including a tour of one of the small cobbled, covered 'closes' which ran off the Royal Mile. This was 'The Real Mary King's Close Tour' that runs under the city and where families lived and worked in the 1700s. These recently rediscovered closes are now preserved and open for tourism. Quite revealing and fascinating. Currently having a meal in a pub before heading off to London on the overnight sleeper train.
