Good things that happened on our way to Bath:
- it was sunny when we left Dover
- we picked up our hire car no probs - a red Hyundai i30
- we drove to Canterbury in about 40 mins
- we JUST avoided a parking ticket by pleading that we were tourists
- we had the best coffee since we've been on holidays, and with the best holiday sandwiches so far
- we got to Bath safely
- we had one of the best 'pub' meals we've ever had at the 'Bear' Hotel in Bath
- the B & B at Bath was fabulous - recently voted top 5 in Europe (thank you Trip Advisor)
Bad things that happened to us travelling to Bath:
- we got lost and wasted 90 mins getting back on track
- our initial intention was to travel the back roads from Canterbury to Dover but we went to plan B (the motorway) after we discovered how slow going it was on the back roads
- it rained on the way
- we didn't have to pay for public toilets - unlike Europe where everywhere is €0.50; all we had to do was find one!
Bath is beautiful. The entire town of about 64,000 people is heritage listed and as such all the buildings are made from the Bath stone (limestone) and because tourism is the main 'industry' of the town all are kept in very good condition.
While we didn't have a lot of time we rugged up and walked into town and took a FREE two hour guided walk with one of the Mayor Accredited tour guides. These brilliant tours go every day, twice a day (only exception being Christmas Day) irrespective of the weather.
There are many museums to visit in the town but we chose No. 1 Royal Crescent, a faithfully restored Georgian terrace - one of 30 built in a semi-circular terrace for wealthy socialites.
The food in this part of the country was much better than expected, excellent in fact and generally is a marked improvement on what we had in Europe since we left the cruise (with the exception of Ieper where we also had excellent meals).
