Next stop in the deep south in the old quaint town of Charleston! Have to say this was one of the places we both really wanted to see and i can easily say it did not disappoint! It is the most beautiful and well preserved towns i have ever seen! Lots of the buildings date back to the 16th and 17th century and it is all still immaculately preserved and maintained! We arrived about lunch time and the sun was shining so we found our way to the visitor centre got a map of the town and parked the car up at the harbour and spent the afternoon walking round taking everything in. Being 90 degrees and very humid it was a very slow walk as its impossible to rush its just too hot!
After walking round for about 3 hours we collected the car and went in search of our accommodation. Charleston is quite an expensive place to stay so it was back to a hostel again but managed to get a private room with shared shower and toilet!
Arrived at our hostel called "the not so hostel" and were checked in by a hippy who had clearly spent the afternoon out in the sun smoking weed cause he was spaced out his tree but very friendly with it and really amusing to chat to! He gave us our linen, showed us to our room and that was all we ever saw of him!!
Got a quick shower and got back in the car to head back into town for some dinner! Chose a restaurant called Tsunami and maybe from the name we should have walked on but the menu sounded a bit like a wagamama so we decided to give it a go! To cut a long story short it was the most disgusting meal i have ever eaten in all my 26 years it was vile the chicken was like a dry flip flop and the curry sauce tasted like brown sauce watered down with vinegar (and mike agrees so its not me being dramatic) it was horrid so being on a tight budget i sent it back to the kitchen and got it taken off the bill as i wouldnt have eaten any more of there offerings and i had funnily enough lost my appetite!
The hostel we were staying at had two balconys with rocking chairs so we went in search of a bottle shop to get some wine to take back to the hostel to play cards! Asked a doorman of a hotel where we could get wine and he told us about a wee bottle shop that used to be a tavern that the pirates would go to when they came onto dry land in the 1700's!! His exact words in his deep southern accent were actually "Well my favourite place to buy liquor in the whole of charleston is the bottle shop at the bottom of this road! It has been a tavern frequented by pirates and is now a bottle shop. I am an energy sensitive kind of a guy and when i touch those old beams i go places man!" It was one of the funniest moments cause he was being all intense and serious and we didnt know where to look not to laugh! Such a nice guy even offered to get us something from the hotel if it was closed! Needless to say we didnt need his help got our wine and played some cards on the balcony before heading to bed!
Day2 Early start got breakfast at the hostel then took the car into town and decided to do a carriage tour round the town. We were only there for a day and wanted to learn a bit about the town so we got a horsedrawn carriage tour which lasted just over an hour and our guide told us loads of history about Charleston. After the tour we walked back to some of the areas she had shown us and got some photos. We had some lunch, looked round a few shops and then headed back to the hostel to get showered for dinner. Pleased to say dinner in the Noisy oyster was much much nicer. After dinner we went to the same bottle shop and headed back to the hostel again. This time we were joined by a couple of american girls so we chatted to them about their travels and ours over a glass of wine then headed to bed!
Early start again as its off to Savannah!
