Day 113, 114, 115 - Port Douglas - Monday 6th, Tuesday 7th, Wednesday 8th February 2012
We woke, got ready, check out and were in our ride to Port Douglas by 10am. The drive up should have been lovely - the scenery was beautiful on the coastal road, however by the end of it Ad and I were feeling really car sick and were green in the face.
Port Douglas is lovely and probably my favourite little town so far - it's all very walkable and the town itself has a lovely old time feel to it with white wooden pub verandas, little shops selling gorgeous house bits and wide tree lined streets. It even has a beautiful little white wooden church right next to the beach - it is so cute and apparently has a huge waiting list. Funny enough it's the low season and with February being the quietest month it means that a lot of the little shops and restaurants are actually closed. The main reason for February being the quietest month is due to the weather - it's their summer and the height of the wet season which means the humidity is very high. The current temperature being 36 but with a 65% humidity it feels like 45 - wow, its most definitely the hottest place we've ever been!
After settling into our room in Port O' Call lodge we walked into town and had a nose around followed by the best coffee I have ever tasted at a local café. Apparently they grow coffee in the local tableland mountains and the café sources it directly from the growers; it was like heaven in a cup! The walk didn't last long due to the heat - literally 5 mins after getting outside our whole bodies were covered in a glistening sweat and we looked like we'd just walked out of the shower. We retreated to the air con supermarket and bought our food for the following 4 days. On the menu tonight was kangaroo - it's really tasty and cheap with 4 fillets coming in at $5.
Back at our place, we chilled, eat our roo and drank our red wine followed by a film.
We had the laziest morning ever and didn't even get out of bed until 1pm!! Once up we did the normal mundane bits like washing our clothes and having a (very) late breakfast. By the time we'd finished this, the clouds had come overhead and a storm was brewing, which seems mad when it is so hot outside that you have a shower and 5 minutes later you are wet again, so we decided to retreat to our air conditioned room and watch another film - we love that uTorrent!
Once the storm had passed we walked into the town and wandered around before heading back to our place for the Mexican night where we had a cheap and tasty Mexican meal accompanied by a corona - $4.
Today is even hotter than usual! It must be something like 50 degrees out in the sun - we are melting, and sensibly we chose today to try and lay on the beach - we lasted all of 30 minutes before giving up and retreating to the shade of a palm tree. We first decided to try and cool off by having a dip into the ocean (well, stinger net enclosure part of the ocean) only to find that the water was as hot as a bath!
We headed back to our place and attempted to cook our lunch - we treated ourselves and bought 2 fish barramundi fillets. However as it is so hot the fridge seems to be on overdrive so halfway through cooking the fish Ad realised they were frozen in the middle! That was that out the window….
After chilling in to air con room we ventured out come early evening and walked into the town with the plan of getting a coffee and cake and watching the sunset from the jetty. We grabbed our coffee and hot footed it down to the jetty just in time to watch the most amazing sunset over the great dividing mountain range in the distance. There was even a thunderstorm over one of the distant mountains to add to the effect.
Content, we wandered back to our place to chill and get ready for the next day's adventure of The Great Barrier Reef!
