From the tropical palm trees and beaches of Goa we are now stranded in the sand dunes and dry heat of the Rajasthan desert!
We caught the overnight express train Mumbai to Delhi. With 30mins to spare we realized we at the wrong station so we had to hitched ride with the most wild Mumbain taxi driver to ever grace the roads, following 10 near death crashes we made on the train on time. Finally settled with some food on our lap and the scenery rushing past, an inquisitive chubby Indian boy decided to join our party. He would not leave and wanted our beer and English money, many awkward silences followed.
In Delhi we stayed in ‘The Main Bazaar’ which was full of tuc-tucs, bikes, dodgey touts and rubbish and dust. The chaos was different to Mumbai, slower and more sprawling but less organized. Being in the big cities is exhilarating but drains you so we decided to head of and discover Rajasthan, before the heat took over in the later weeks.
To navigate the desert we have hired an AC taxi and recuitred our own personal driver, Noel. We began a 9hr drive from Delhi to Bikaner (just a pit stop) and arrived to a hotel of absolute luxury. We are now in Jaisalmer about to explore the goldedn city. We spent yesterday trekking the dunes and planes iof the desert on our own camels. They are huge and luckily didn’t spit too much, but a lot came out of the other end. For our meal we our hosts cooked up some delicious spicy local cuisine. To finish we spent the night up on a terrace open to the sky. The sky was so clear we could see and infinite number of stars and had the perfect nights sleep – we were smashed though. That’s it for now… Jodpur, Udaipur and an IPL cricket game next.
