Our Travels
7th February 2004
Arrived in Butterworth very confused - we have no lonley planet for Malaysia so we had literally no idea where to go! We obviously looked a little like damsels in distress as i nice man suggested we get the ferry to penang and told us the name of the backpacker area - all good and thats what we did!
Can we just say that there is NOTHING to do in Panang at all. We had a wander round, got some food and ended up chatting to the English girls that were sharing our dorm, who appen to be doing pretty much the same trip as us minus South America and one of them to southampton uni so that was quite strange. They are also doing the same Oz experience as us so we\'ll undoun\\btably see them again.
Went for a curry (yes fopr those of you who know Em doesn\'t eat curry - but she does now!!!) Sat in a very cheesy bar with music that didn\'t escape 1980 - how dull!!!

Managed to find a HUGE shopping mall today and could have spent dangerous amounts of money, but luckily managed to restrain ourselves, found a cimema and went and saw Cold Mountain, which was brilliant and we recommend you see it, although not in Malaysia cause even that was an experience - THEY DONT TURN OFF THEIR MOBILES!!!! To make it even worse they talk on them in the middle of the cimema - how annoying!
Got train to Kuala Lumpar that night.

Had the worst night sleep ever with temperatures at what felt like -5. Checked into the most awful hostel EVER for some sleep and later decided to cut our loses and leave. Managed to find a really nice hostel so thats all good. Had a wander and some dinner at Nandos.

Got up really early today and made the 3 hour bus journey to Malaka. Went on a river cruise which was really entertaining and saw lizards. Went on a trickshaw and had a guided tour of China town with this really nice Malaysian guy, then took the bus to Mini Malaysia - great day.

After having curry for our bereakfast (not by choice!) Decided to go up the KL Tower, which was fantatsic the views of the city were amazing. Then we did what Malaysia is famous for - SHOPPING! Found a huge plaza with average shops, bought a couple of things each....then went to the Twin Tower's and there is no way we could have spent any money it was all designer Gucci, Chanel, Versace........after a long day we headed back and found that our hostel was doing a free BBQ - all good so we headed up there and strangely bumped into Glen and Alex (for those who dont know two of our friends from uni!!) Very Surreal! Had some drinkies etc etc
