Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand, an attraction for many a traveller looking for an adrenalin rush or quick thrill. Our location, 134 meters above the Kararau Gorge with our legs strapped and hearts beating double the normal rate. Your fired up and ready, you look down, you look up, don't look down it makes it worse, you look down again big mistake it's too late and you've already jumped and defied every natural self preservatory urge.
The time had come for us to take the jump and feeling courageous we booked the highest bungy in the country, standing three times higher than most. The drive up to the top was a steep and narrow unsealed road, which was nerve racking enough so having problems with our tickets just sealed the deal, making us unnaturally uneasy before the jump. Finally we got everything sorted and were kitted out ready to take the cable car to the suspended pod. The lightest person goes first so Grills got to watch the first jump. The moment before you jump was weird, they describe it as a "brain fart" where your mind stutters and you just jump. It was exactly like that, it happens so quickly, before you know it you have thrown yourself off the edge. We both absolutely loved it and being one of the main goals for us whilst travelling, we were glad we pulled through and enjoyed it. In fact, we liked it so much we tried to push the boundaries a little further.
In the same place, they have another attraction, the world's highest swing. After speaking to one of the staff and hinting on wanting a bigger rush, they suggested one, to hang backwards and upside down. Five minutes later, we were being put into a tandem harness hanging 140 meters face down waiting to be dropped backwards so we swing straight into the face of the cliff. We won't lie we were shaken up just hanging there, mostly due to the disorientation of being upside down but that was why we were doing it. The rush was really intense and although it didn't compare to the bungy it was worth doing for the fear element.
Up to now, we have been travelling with the two lads, Jon and Paul. From here onwards our plans started to differ and since we have become pretty much inseparable we decided to do a little rearranging of the itinerary and stick together for the rest of our time here. We decided to have a night out on the town for our last night here and headed out to a few bars with some others we met on the bus.
Although our time in Queenstown was short, it lived up to its expectations and ended on a high note with the lads. The next few days were spent in Christchurch where we spent the days catching up with the necessities and enjoyed the town again before heading up to our last destination in the south island, Kaikoura.
