Wednesday/Thursday 12th & 13th December 2018 - We set off for the Mount Remarkable National Park where we spent a few days camping at the base of the rugged quartzite cliffs amongst the River Red Gum trees; waking each morning with Emu's & Kangaroos wandering around our caravan in search of food and Kookaburra's singing and flitting in between the trees.
The weather for the most part throughout our stay at Mt Remarkable was cold and wet, however we did get some dry spells allowing us to get out and explore this lovely place.
We drove through Wilmington a small mountain town on the way to the other side of the Mt Remarkable Ranges where we walked down into Alligator Gorge with it steep and high sides of orange and black rock, reminding us of past gorge's recently hiked. We made our way along the river bed with trees and bushes swaying gently in the breeze before we climbed out and up to the car park.
Stopped in the beautiful town of Melrose, looked around the monument that gave views across the town below and the ranges it was nestled between and a drink in the old ancient pub before we headed for the Bridle 4X4Track.
The Bridle 4X4 track is a scenic dirt track that winds its way up and through grazing land with very steep climbs and descents that gave spectacular views out across the bay towards Whyalla and the Mt Remarkable ranges.
We spent most of Thursday taking shelter in the caravan from the rain that had started the night before. The storm that was forecast didn't let up even the wildlife seemed to have disappeared into the mist giving poor visibility of the ranges beyond.
A break in the weather later in the afternoon gave us an opportunity to take the Mambray Creek walk that took us along the base of the steep mountain cliffs and the creek, now seeing the kangaroos and wallabies that had been absent earlier in the day; feeding at the base of the tall River Red Gums with their wet red bark appearing to shimmer in the dull light of the day.
