Having a car on this trip has given us so much freedom to explore more of the countryside. One of the days we were most looking forward to was a driving day through the 'Route of the Pueblos Blancos' (white hill towns). These are small villages, mostly of no more than a thousand people, that are located high up in the Sierra De Grazelema Mountains.
We set off from Ronda and quickly found ourselves on a narrow, single lane highway. It was filled with hairpin turns as it snaked its way high up into the mountains. I was told that my job was to take in the beautiful views (and not watch the speedometer). The views were stunning and terrifying, as often there was a sheer drop-off below the highway. This was Matt's dream road for driving, and had it not been for my groans and squeals, I'm sure he would have felt more like a professional driver than a tourist.
We stopped in several of the villages along the route and soaked up their small town appeal. I had expected this day to be far more touristy, but I guess the fact that the towns can only be accessed by cars and the thrilling/terrifying nature of the road keeps many of the tourists at bay. This was one of our more enjoyable days yet.
