We sometimes wonder what locals think about the activities that we tourists find worthy of our time and energy. For example, we would never consider cycling around some farmers' fields in Ontario in the late afternoon sun, watching people work, and checking out their vegetables. So why is this such a beautiful experience in Hoi An? There is just something so appealing about this city that we returned for a 6 night stay, after an initial 11 night one in November 2017. Hoi An was our first destination ever in southeast Asia! It is such an easy place to plonk yourselves down in for days, and alternate town strolls, countryside cycling, beach visits, cultural activities, and the guest house pool. We also think that Hoi An just might just be the best value for money accommodation we have experienced in southeast Asia. For about $21 CAD per night, we had a huge room with king sized bed and walk-out balcony, pool, free daily bike use, and a breakfast buffet. Amazing.
So this stint in Hoi An was all about relaxing, and seeing where the day would take us, as we have already seen many of the sights in the general area. We noticed a big difference in the numbers of tourists from last time (it had been the rainy season), and so we often got up early to take photos before the town got too crowded. We had fun going back to our favourite eating spots, and tried to find the restaurant at An Bang Beach that had boasted "The World's Best Spring Rolls" (which we had initially laughed at, and then stunningly agreed with), but to no avail! The moral of this story is when you find a dish that is so incredibly scrumptious with just the right flakiness of pastry, freshly made and piping hot, and liberally topped with sharp cracked black pepper, you should write down the name of this brilliant establishment, because you just never know if you will be back! The World's Best Spring Rolls will live firmly in our hearts and minds forever (sniff sniff).
We're going to be bold and say that Hoi An might be our favourite city in southeast Asia. If Hoi An Tourism is reading this, you're welcome, and we will vouch for your city any time!
